How to Plan a DJ Set (Step-by-Step)
Most sets fall apart for the same reasons: the energy peaks too early, two tracks fight harmonically, or the DJ runs out of ideas 40 minutes in. Planning fixes all three without making your set feel pre-recorded.

Why planning beats pure improvisation
There is a myth that a planned set is a dishonest set. In practice, almost every DJ you admire arrives with structure: a rough opening, a handful of known transitions, two or three tracks they intend to peak with, and a closer. What they improvise is the order and the timing, not the pool of records.
Planning does two things. It removes decisions you do not want to make under pressure — key compatibility, tempo jumps, how long you have left — and it frees attention for the decisions only you can make in the room, like reading whether the crowd wants another eight bars or a hard cut.
The method below works for a 60-minute warm-up, a 90-minute club slot or a two-hour festival set. Scale the section lengths, not the logic.
Step 1: Define the slot before you touch a track
Write down four things: length, position in the night, expected room size, and what the DJ before and after you plays. A 22:00 warm-up in front of a peak-time techno headliner is a completely different brief from a 02:00 closing set, even in the same venue with the same crowd.
The warm-up brief
Your job is to build a floor, not to win the night. Stay 6–12 BPM below the headliner, keep energy under roughly 6 out of 10, and leave the biggest records alone — including the ones you know would land. A warm-up that peaks is a warm-up that gets no repeat bookings.
The peak-time brief
Here you need vocal hooks, recognisable drops and at least three records you are certain of. Plan your two highest-energy moments and deliberately place a dip between them: a floor that never comes down never goes properly up either.
The closing brief
Closers reward records that are emotional rather than loud. Plan a descent — drop tempo, widen the space, then finish on something people can sing or remember. Choose that final track first and work backwards.
Step 2: Pick your closer, then your peak, then fill the gaps
Building a set front-to-back is why so many DJs run out of energy headroom. Instead, anchor the two moments that matter — the peak and the close — and treat everything else as the route between them.
A practical shape for a 90-minute set: 20 minutes of warm-up, 25 minutes of build, a 25-minute peak with one deliberate dip inside it, then 20 minutes of descent. Sketch those four blocks and assign a target energy range to each (for example 3–5, 5–7, 8–9, 6–4).
Once the blocks exist, pull tracks from your crates into them rather than into one long list. You will immediately notice which block is thin — usually the build, because that is the hardest material to buy and the least fun to dig for.
Step 3: Map BPM so tempo changes are intentional
Tempo is the least forgiving variable in a set. As a rule of thumb, a jump of up to about 3 BPM is invisible with pitch riding, 4–6 BPM works if the transition is a cut or the drums change, and anything beyond that needs a real technique behind it: a halftime record, a drop swap, a break, or an outright stop.
Plot your tracks in order and look at the BPM column as a line, not a set of numbers. A healthy set climbs in small steps with the occasional deliberate drop back, usually paired with an energy dip. A set that saws up and down by 8 BPM every second record is going to feel restless on a big system even if each individual mix is clean.
Genre tempo anchors
Rough working ranges: house 120–128, tech house 124–130, techno 130–145, drum & bass 172–176, dubstep 140 (often felt as 70), trance 136–142, phonk 130–160 with heavy halftime feel. If you cross genres, cross at a mathematically friendly point — 140 dubstep against 140 techno, or 174 drum & bass against an 87 BPM halftime intro.
Step 4: Shape the energy arc
Score every track from 1 to 10 for energy, judged as "how much does this raise the room", not "how loud is it". A stripped 128 BPM roller can be a 4 while a slower vocal house record is an 8 because everyone knows the hook.
Draw the arc. You are looking for a rising line with a jagged top and a clear resolution — not a straight ramp, and not a flat plateau. Two specific failures show up visually straight away: the early peak (a 9 in the first 20 minutes with nowhere left to go) and the shelf (six consecutive 7s, which the floor reads as monotony no matter how good each record is).
Deliberate dips are what make peaks land. Placing a 6 between two 9s costs you three minutes and buys back the impact of the second 9. In the SoundStash Set Planner the arc is drawn for you as you type each track, so a shelf or an early peak is obvious before you ever load a USB.
Step 5: Check harmonic flow, not just tempo
Two beatmatched records can still sound wrong, and the reason is almost always key. Harmonic mixing means sequencing so consecutive tracks share a key, sit a fifth apart, or move by one step around the Camelot wheel — 8A into 8B, 9A or 7A, for example.
You do not need to be harmonically perfect all night. You need to know when you are clashing, so the clash is a choice you made rather than a mistake the room hears. Long blends demand compatibility; a hard cut on a drop can get away with almost anything.

Step 6: Build it in the planner
Once the shape is decided, get it out of your head and into a document. For each track record title, artist, BPM, key and energy — that is the minimum needed to see problems rather than guess at them.

Finding candidate tracks

Step 7: Leave room to be wrong
Plan roughly 120% of the tracks you need and mark a handful as optional. Then pick two "eject" records — one that raises the room fast, one that calms it — and know their key and BPM cold. When the floor does something you did not expect, those two are what save the set.
Also plan your exits. If the promoter cuts you ten minutes short, know which two tracks you drop and how you get from where you are to your closer in one move.

A worked 90-minute example
Warm-up (20 min, energy 3–5, 122–125 BPM): three grooving house records in 8A, 8B and 9B, nothing anyone will recognise. Build (25 min, energy 5–7, 125–128): tempo climbs in single steps, first vocal appears at minute 35, keys move 9B → 4A → 11A.
Peak (25 min, energy 8–9 with one 6, 128–130): your two biggest records placed 12 minutes apart, with a stripped tool between them to reset. Descent (20 min, energy 6 → 4, back to 124): drop tempo on a break, then finish on the emotional record you chose first.
That set is 22–24 tracks. Prepare 28. Play the ones the room asks for.
